North Devon stretches from the Bristol Channel coast inland to the western fringes of Exmoor, a sparsely populated region of steep valleys, moorland, and dramatic coastline. Barnstaple and Bideford are the main towns, with Victorian and Edwardian terraces near their centres and modern family estates on the outskirts. South Molton, Great Torrington, and Holsworthy serve as smaller market-town centres with period properties and newer builds. The coastal villages — Croyde, Woolacombe, Braunton, Appledore, and Westward Ho! — have a mix of traditional cottages, seaside bungalows, and modern homes, many used as holiday lets. Inland, the farming communities across the Taw and Torridge valleys have scattered farmhouses, converted barns, and smallholdings accessed by narrow lanes. The topography is hilly throughout, with steep gradients and tight turns on many rural roads.
House removals are the core booking, with holiday home changeovers and seasonal lettings adding significant workload from spring through autumn. Rural moves, farm moves, and furniture deliveries for second homes feature regularly. Retirement moves to the coast and market towns are common. The distances between properties can be considerable, and journey times are often longer than the miles suggest due to the road network. Smaller vans suit the tighter lanes and access points found across the region. Drivers carry full protection kit, and a helper is available for larger moves or tricky access.
Barnstaple is the main hub, with the A361 Link Road connecting south to the M5 at Tiverton and onward to Exeter. Bideford sits to the west along the A39, and Ilfracombe is reached northward via the A361. The A39 Atlantic Highway continues west toward Bude and north Cornwall. South-east, the A361 connects to the M5 and Taunton in Somerset. Drivers cover South Molton, Great Torrington, and Holsworthy across the region, and reach Braunton, Croyde, and Woolacombe along the coast. The A361 Link Road is the only dual-carriageway route in the region and is the lifeline for longer moves. The rural roads through the Taw and Torridge valleys are narrow, steep in places, and often used by farm vehicles. The coastal roads through Croyde and Woolacombe get very busy in summer, and some of the village streets — particularly in Appledore and Clovelly — are practically inaccessible to larger vehicles. Exmoor lanes are particularly challenging, with unfenced moorland, livestock crossings, and steep descents that require caution with loaded vans.
