South Devon encompasses the coastline from Torbay around to Plymouth, with the rolling South Hams countryside and the southern edge of Dartmoor inland. Torbay’s three towns — Torquay, Paignton, and Brixham — have dense Victorian seaside housing, retirement properties, and modern estates. The South Hams villages — Kingsbridge, Salcombe, Dartmouth, and Modbury — have a mix of period cottages, harbour-side properties, and newer builds, many commanding premium prices and spectacular views. The Dartmoor-edge communities around Buckfastleigh, Ashburton, and South Brent have stone farmhouses, converted barns, and moorland-edge housing. Totnes has a distinctly alternative character with Georgian and Victorian properties in its steep high street. Newton Abbot, the area’s main market town, has a mix of period and modern housing.
House removals make up the core of bookings, with holiday home changeovers a major part of the seasonal workload in the South Hams and along the coast. Retirement moves to the coast and country are common. Rural moves and farm moves add variety, particularly around the Dartmoor fringe. Furniture deliveries for holiday lets and second homes keep all van sizes busy from spring through autumn. Downsizing moves from larger properties are regular. Some coastal and Dartmoor moves involve narrow lanes, steep gradients, and very limited turning space. Drivers carry full protection kit, and a helper is recommended for the more challenging locations.
The A380 South Devon Expressway provides the main route from Exeter south to Newton Abbot. Torquay and Paignton are connected via the A380 and A3022. The A38 runs south-west from Exeter through Buckfastleigh and South Brent to Plymouth. Taunton and Somerset are reached northward via the M5 from Exeter. Drivers cover Totnes, Kingsbridge, and Dartmouth in the South Hams, and Newton Abbot, Bovey Tracey, and Ashburton along the Dartmoor edge. The A381 through Totnes to Kingsbridge and the A3122 to Dartmouth are narrow and winding in sections. The South Hams lanes are famous for their steep, single-track character with high hedges and blind bends. Salcombe and Dartmouth are particularly challenging for larger vehicles — advance discussion about vehicle size is advisable. The Dartmoor roads through Widecombe, Haytor, and Princetown are exposed and can be affected by weather. The A380 Expressway flows well as a dual carriageway but narrows to single carriageway between Newton Abbot and Torquay through Kingskerswell.
